Mountain of Education Day 2

The summit on the education sphere, moderated by Pastor Didier Habimana, began with a prayer followed by praise and worship. Pastor Didier then welcomed the day's speakers, including Professor Alfred Bizoza and Samuel Hayes Jr., to share their insights on how Africans can invest in and effectively contribute to achieving quality education in Africa.
Insights:
  • The intelligent heart acquires knowledge and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge by Professor Alfred Bizoza
Subject 1: What best education practices from other countries can be adapted into African education systems and how would international partnerships and strategic alliances improve the quality of our education?
Speaker: Professor Alfred Bizoza
Learning is a potent force, and we are revitalized through the acquisition of knowledge. However, despite its importance, access to quality education remains a significant challenge in many parts of Africa. This article explores the current state of the education system in Africa, the role of international partnerships, and strategic alliances in improving education quality.
Key Challenges Facing the Education System

- Limited Allocation of Resources: Many African countries allocate insufficient resources to education, affecting infrastructure, teaching materials, and teacher salaries.
- Gender Disparities: Societal norms in various African societies often limit girls' access to education.
- Limited Early Education Access: Only 20% of pre-primary-aged children are enrolled in early education programs.
- Teacher Training: Only 60% of teachers in Africa are formally trained, which significantly impacts the quality of education.
Proverbs 18:15 emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge. Education goes beyond administrative functions; it empowers individuals with the ability to act, respond, and innovate. Conferences like Africa Haguruka highlight the importance of knowledge acquisition for societal advancement.
Improving the Quality of Education

To improve education quality in Africa, several strategies are essential:
1. Agenda for 2063: Ensure that at least one in three children attends kindergarten and 70% of secondary school students progress to tertiary education.
2. Promote Student-Centered Learning: Infrastructure and teacher training must meet students' needs and expectations.
3. Encourage Practical Learning: Students should engage in practical problem-solving to apply theoretical knowledge effectively.
4. Document Solutions: Move beyond issue documentation to also record and implement solutions.
Partnerships for Educational Improvement

Historically, education in Africa relied heavily on colonial powers and organizations like UNESCO. Today, the church can play a dual role by collaborating with governments to enhance educational infrastructure and provide scholarships and teacher training. The church has a unique opportunity to instill godly values and address moral and ethical issues within the education system.
Africa must take full responsibility for its education system. This includes reducing reliance on external inputs and fostering collaboration between African countries. Encouraging investment from African businessmen and billionaires can enhance education quality and attract international students. The church, parents, and the broader African community must collectively work towards developing a robust and effective education system.
Subject 2: With the current satanic agenda to influence the moral and spiritual atmosphere in the education system, how can we redeem and protect our schools and why is it very important?
Speaker: Samuel Hayes Jr.
In Nehemiah 2:7, we are reminded that regardless of the sphere we occupy, we can make a significant impact on transforming our continent. This principle underscores the importance of purpose and dedication in serving God, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by Africa.
One effective approach to this transformation is the Apostolic Campaign, a strategy that can be applied to current challenges facing the continent. This theory likens the role of an apostolic leader to that of a general in a war—one who strategizes and fights for a cause. A historical example is Hudson Taylor, a 19th-century medical practitioner who, driven by divine inspiration, moved to China. Despite cultural barriers and personal hardships, he remained committed to delivering God’s message in a way that resonated with the Chinese people. Taylor’s approach exemplifies how we can adapt our strategies to meet the unique needs of different contexts.
The Apostolic campaign includes;
- Apostolic Leaders: These individuals are equipped to teach and influence across various domains through their writings and actions. They are master builders, constantly seeking knowledge to better serve and lead.
- Apostolic Spheres: This includes various sectors such as the church, marketplace, and education. Leaders in these spheres can advance God’s agenda by integrating spiritual principles with practical actions.
The Apostolic Campaign involves understanding both the current and desired states of our educational and societal environments. By identifying obstacles and collaborating with others, we can develop and implement effective solutions. This includes addressing the challenges imposed by secular influences and ensuring that education serves to reinforce, rather than erode, our Christian values.
Challenges Facing Education in Africa

1. Cultural and Moral Erosion: Western media and ideologies often clash with Christian values, impacting our identity.
2. Resource Limitations: There is a shortage of facilities and trained teachers necessary for effective knowledge transfer.
3. Economic and Political Instability: These factors hinder support for educational initiatives.
4. Erosion of Family Values: Economic pressures and migration reduce the reinforcement of family values.
5. Secularization and Moral Relativism: These trends impact the moral foundation of education.
6. Impact of Technology and Media: The rapid advancement in technology and media poses both challenges and opportunities for education.
Strategies for Protecting and Enhancing Education

1. Active Involvement and Advocacy: Engage in school governance and policy advocacy.
2. Building Alternative Education Structures: Support Christian, homeschooling, and community schools to foster character development.
3. Mentorship and Positive Resources: Provide mentorship and develop faith-based curricula.
4. Engaging with Technology: Utilize technology and media positively to support educational goals.
The church and marketplace spheres must work together to create a unified approach. This involves building spiritual and moral foundations, preserving Christian culture, and developing future leaders. By fostering strong communities and social stability, we contribute to the long-term success of our educational and societal systems.
This is a call to action for Africans to actively participate in transforming our continent. Like Nehemiah, who did not merely receive a vision but took decisive action, we must engage in school governance and structure environments that reflect our values. Together, let us embrace our roles and contribute to a meaningful transformation in Africa’s education system.
Q&A session
How can Africans take full ownership of their education system even though our children move to foreign countries for education, and is it feasible to instill our own local languages as a medium of instruction in the education system?

Taking full ownership of our education system involves recognizing our responsibilities rather than blaming colonial powers. As the saying goes, a servant cannot surpass their master unless they strive for greater knowledge and experience. Similarly, for Jeremiah to understand and address the problem, he moved to learn about it, recognized the issue, and sought permission to implement solutions. African children are still sent to foreign countries for education due to deficiencies in our system. It is feasible to implement local languages as a medium of instruction when there is a clear purpose and commitment to improving the education system. By addressing these deficiencies and setting a strong purpose, we can enhance our education system and instill local languages effectively.
Can you share your testimony of how you met Jesus and your journey within the military?

My journey began in college where I met my wife. After college, I pursued a career in the military, following in my father's footsteps. I believe that the discipline I acquired in the military significantly shaped me into the Christian I am today. My wife and I also started a business, which my mother continued, and she is now a business consultant. We have three children: two sons and a daughter. I was saved when I was 12 years old and have been part of various denominations over the years, but my wife has always been a constant reminder of God's presence in my life.
How can we apply the apostolic campaign to influence our societies and their peers?

When considering the apostolic campaign, we need to recognize the distinction between anointing within the church and influence in the marketplace. In the context of education, the first step is to identify who we aim to influence and who the decision-makers are. By resourcing and preparing a curriculum tailored to these insights, we can effectively use our influence to bring about positive change in our societies.
Why is it challenging to mobilize resources for education within church communities?

Mobilizing resources for education within church communities is challenging due to a prevalent mindset that separates the roles of churches and schools. Churches are seen as places for learning spiritual and moral principles, while schools are viewed as institutions for scientific education. The 2012 book by Professor Alfred Bizoza titled "A New Look at Churches in Rwanda: Their roles in Socio-economic Transformation" discusses how the church can contribute to the socio-economic transformation of its members. Often, the church is perceived as being detached from the worldly impact it can have. By valuing education and recognizing its importance, it will become easier to mobilize resources to build and support schools.
How can we fight against satanic altars affecting the education, family, and religion spheres?

To combat satanic altars in the education, family, and religion spheres, pastors must prepare teachings that address these challenges directly. This requires understanding that it is already a form of spiritual warfare. Pastors should recognize their higher responsibility to educate church members who can actively engage with and influence these spheres. It is crucial to be aware of worldly systems and strategically advance the kingdom of God within them.
Is the student-centered methodology well applied in Rwanda's education system and if so how can we transfer it to other African countries?

While the student-centered methodology is applied in Rwanda, there are still gaps in its proper implementation and effectiveness. Despite significant improvements over the past 30 years since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, challenges remain. Having spent over 22 years within the education system, I have observed firsthand how students often perceive lectures negatively. Although good implementations exist, there is still a journey ahead to ensure this methodology is effectively and comprehensively integrated into the system. Additionally, many other African countries have yet to implement this approach in their education systems.
In Rwanda, the education system is controlled by the government. How can we contribute to or advance our input within this policy-making environment?

We can contribute by leveraging our time and focusing on building generational change. This involves engaging with policymakers, offering constructive feedback, and working collaboratively to set off initiatives that align with goodwill and aim to advance the education system.
How can we educate our children growing up in this digital era in a way that aligns with Godly values?

We can educate our children through design thinking, which involves building and structuring ideas within a group, creating prototypes, and testing their implementation and application. This approach helps us work together to instill Godly values while navigating the challenges of a digitalized world.
How can youth overcome indecisiveness in career choice-making?

Youth can overcome indecisiveness through career-building centers that offer guidance. At the secondary and university levels, it is essential to identify a passion and a problem they want to solve. When they find where their passion and the problem they want to address align, they will discover their ideal career path.
In our efforts to improve the education system, what remedies can we implement to address the issue of having below 70% of teachers with degrees?

To tackle the issue of having less than 70% of teachers with degrees, we must recognize that having a degree is not sufficient; teachers must also be trained in effective knowledge transfer. There are many resources available that are not currently allocated to education. Prioritizing investment in teacher training and development is essential. This requires a concerted effort from parents, teachers, and the government to advance Africa's education system.
In the African learning curriculum, we still rely on various programs sourced from foreign countries. How can we initiate a vision-accelerated program to improve homeschooling in African countries?

To initiate a vision-accelerated program for improving homeschooling in African countries, it's essential to implement an awareness campaign and communicate the issue to policymakers. Building the will of both the community and policymakers is crucial to gaining support for this initiative.
Day two of our summit on the education mountain was truly eye-opening, highlighting key factors that influence the education system and ways we can make a difference. On day three, we invite you to explore how the African diaspora and people of African descent can play a crucial role in advancing education in Africa. Learn how the diaspora can help foster ‘quality’ education, by empowering students with the skills to address real-world challenges. Don’t miss this chance to be part of a transformative event!
